Birds of a feather - A true story of hope and the healing power of animals

This book provided me with confirmation of many of my own insights as a parrot behavior expert, about the general misunderstandings around the domestication of parrots as a ‘pet’ instead of a companion animal.

For many people the acquisition of an exotic animal like a parrot is often based on a naïve desire to have something unusual and beautiful to show their friends. These have no idea how to deal with a non-domesticated beast in their living room. Therefore these well-meaning people shut these animals in a cage that is regularly far too cramped for them.

When birds are restricted in their natural behavior through a too small cage and often in combination of boredom they can develop undesirable repeated performances such as screaming, compulsive acts and feather picking often included with automutilation. Such birds ended up mostly in a sanctuary.

Veterans who gave their lives or survive the war have often their own trauma’s, like the birds. The author has found a wonderful combination in how parrots and vets can heal each other by means of therapy for both of them. She shared some great experiences as a psychology.
