Bonobo Handshake - A Memoir of love and adventure in the Congo

This story is not what I had expected of it. I thought that the content mainly was written about the Bonobo project in Congo. But that's not true at all. A large part of her story is going about the war crimes in Congo. Among other things, chimpanzees and bonobos are often shot to kill for the flesh and the children of the killed apes are often traumatized and will be sold as pets.

She does not shudder to write down the details of rape or what happens during a genocide. Of course, this should not be disregarded by the reader, but it could have been a little less extensive. It gave me more insight into the war situations in Africa. (I choose consciously not following the news emphatically.)

However, she found a good balance between these horrors and her humorous character which sometimes led to hilarious descriptions of her situations with the bonobos because they use often sex handlings for different situations in their social lives as a group.

To my surprise, the monkey type the bonobo is not well known to the main public at all. In her book, she tells about the big behavioral differences between the chimpanzees and the bonobos. She and her husband approach this in a scientifically way and they are trying to found answers on their own questions.
