Dani’s story - Sometimes the kindness of strangers can save a life

After I finished the book, I was still wondering how it was even possible that a mother could do something like that kind of neglect to her own child. Dani is neglect in all the ways you can imagine; personal hygiene, social, emotional and mental. She was even malnourished. I was shocked about the events with regard of Dani, not only in the past but also when she’s put in the authority system. The court cases of neglect of the biological mother, and the process of the adoption procedure consumed a lot emotional energy from me.

This kind of story is a typical example that the child protection authorities have been failed again. I’m still asking myself how it could happen that the first visits of the child protection authorities have been failed in a such horrific situation that already started. There was a time label of 3 years between the last notification and the previous one. How is that possible?

When Diane and Bernie see the photo of Dani they want to adopt her. But the advice is negative because she needs so much special care. The adoption procedure is delayed. On one side the court had to decide with regard the biological mother about losing her parent rights and punishment. And on the other side the biological mother will not give the birth certification so that the adoption cannot be legal.

It’s a story that touched my heart and which one that I will never forget.
